Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Hike

Start early. Trailhead lots fill by 9 a.m. most of the year, and summer storms build in the afternoon.

Buy a parking tag first

Any car parked in the park for more than 15 minutes needs one: $5 a day, $15 a week, or $40 for the year. Buy it at recreation.gov and keep it on your phone, or pick one up at the Sugarlands Visitor Center.

Chimney Tops

3.5 mi RT · ~1,400 ft gain · hard

The trail our street is named for. Steep, steady climb to an observation point facing the twin rock pinnacles. The summit itself has been closed since the 2016 fire.

Alum Cave Bluffs

4.4 mi RT · ~1,100 ft gain · moderate

Log bridges, Arch Rock, and a huge overhanging bluff with valley views. Turn around at Arch Rock (2.3 mi RT) for an easier outing with kids.

Grotto Falls

2.6 mi RT · easy–moderate

The only waterfall in the park you can walk behind. Reached from the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, which closes to cars in winter.

Kuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome)

1 mi RT · paved, steep

Highest point in the Smokies, with an observation tower. Usually 10–20°F colder than town, so bring a layer. The road is closed in winter.

Cades Cove

11-mi loop road · allow 3–4 hrs

Best wildlife viewing in the park, especially early morning. Wednesdays from May through September the loop is closed to cars and open to bikes and walkers.

Mountain living

Good to know

Bears are real

Bag all trash and keep it inside until it goes in the bear-proof bin. Never leave food in the car or on the deck.

Drive the mountain roads in low gear

Use a low gear on steep descents so you aren't riding the brakes. Watch for tight switchbacks, especially after dark or in rain.

Beat the Parkway traffic

Downtown traffic is slowest from late morning to evening. Use the trolley or go early.

Cell signal is spotty

Download offline maps before you head into the park. Most of it has no service.
